In episode 16 of the SYS Podcast I interview the founder of The Black List, Franklin Leonard. Franklin has worked as a development executive for years and recently launched The Black List website to help up-and-coming screenwriters break into the industry.

For most of the interview we talk about the real nuts and bolts of using the site and how writers can get the most out of it. If you haven’t used The Black List site yet, you might want to check it out first, as much of the interview won’t make a lot of sense if you’re not familiar with the site and how it works.

The podcast is available in iTunes, YouTube, Stitcher (for Android users), the Windows Marketplace, and the Blackberry store or you can simply listen to it or watch it right from my blog.

  1. Hello Ashley,
Listened with interest to Franklin Leonard, obviously a smart articulate young man. I’m left with the feeling they are running a script analysis service, at a cost of course. I wonder also what are the qualifications of the people grading the scripts, how much are they being paid and how long do they spend with each script and like a lot of screenwriting contests, might be a mining expedition for ideas, but I could be wrong. Having said that I don’t think the Black List is for me. Where to go from here, still no idea. I think a scriptwriter came up with the phrase “A voice crying in the wilderness.”
Best wishes, I still enjoy your efforts to make sense of a bizarre business.
    Ron

    1. Ron – Yeah, Franklin states that all the readers have at least 1 year experience in the business.

Why did you decide it wasn’t for you? My advice is to always try everything and see what works and then push hard on a channel when you start to see some success with it.
